How to Get the Most Out of Your Massage

Before Your Massage

  • If you feel you are coming down with something before your massage, please cancel your appointment.  It is in you and your therapists’ best interest.

  • If you have any medical conditions, tell your therapist before your appointment.  You may need to get a doctor’s note.

  • Since you are going to be lying down, try not to eat a heavy meal before your massage.  Doing so may make you uncomfortable.  Try to make your last meal 2 ½ hours before your massage.  If you get really hungry eat something light.

  • Avoid caffeine prior to your massage.  (Caffeine can cause difficulty relaxing)

  • Before you get on the table take off all jewelry and hair accessories that may get in the way.  Such as:  necklaces, bracelets, rings, and anklets.

  • Your cell phone should be turned off before your massage.

  • While it is not required, it is usually best to get fully undressed when receiving a full body massage.  But remember relaxation is what we are striving for.  Undress to the level of your comfort.  Remember, you will be covered at all times, with the exception of the area being massaged.

  • Before your massage, tell your therapist where your areas of discomfort are, this way she knows what areas to focus on, and if any, what areas to avoid.

  • Always be truthful on your intake form, and remember to tell your therapist of any updated information.

During Your Massage

  • Take nice deep relaxing breaths.  This will help you and your muscles to relax more quickly.

  • If you are uncomfortable in any way during your treatment, (pressure is too deep, not deep enough, etc…) please express it to your therapist.

  • Conversation is entirely up to the client.  Some people like to engage in conversation, while others prefer not to talk at all.  However, it should be noted that to be the most effective and healing it can be, massage often involves energy work and flow.  You and the therapist will be more able to relax and focus on the bodywork itself if conversation is limited.

After Your Massage

  • Don’t get up too quickly.  You may feel dizzy.

  • Drink lots of water for the next few days.  Massage releases waste products from your muscles.  The extra water will help your body to flush those toxins out of your system.
